I've been making Bisquick vegan pancakes for quite some time. I mean, if it's better than "from scratch," then why would I go through any extra effort?
I started making these when my husband and I first started living together and we were ballin' on a budget. Our first summer in Colorado, we lived off of my savings and his salary.
We lived in a 500-square-foot garden-level apartment with a three-month lease. We pinched our pennies, hoping we could stay in Denver for good once the summer ended.
Making budget-friendly meals and dutifully shopping the sales at Kroger paid off.

Wait. Bisquick is vegan?
Bisquick Original is vegan by nature, but the pancake recipe calls for milk and eggs. Hmm.
I nixed the egg and just used my non-dairy milk. I added the "melt in your mouth" ingredients on the back of the box, and voila!
However, it's important to note that there are several versions of Bisquick, and not all are vegan. Bisquick Original in the United States contains no milk ingredients, though someone on Reddit pointed out that the "Betty Crocker Bisquick Multi-Purpose Baking Mix" in the UK does contain milk ingredients.
Read labels!
Other vegan-friendly pancake mixes include Pearl Milling Company Original (NOT the "complete" version) and Krusteaz Original.
So I don't need egg?
Nope! I'm convinced the egg step is just to make you feel more chef-y.
Kidding. Kind of.
The egg does help bind the batter just a smidge but trust me, you won't really miss it when you leave it out.
Because it's missing that binding agent, I just wouldn't make your pancakes too, too large because you might have trouble flipping them.
What vegan milk should I use?
Use any vegan milk!
I've tried this week coconut (carton, not canned), vanilla almond, and unsweetened almond, and they're all great.
This recipe already contains vanilla and sugar, so any vanilla milks (vanilla almond, vanilla soy) may make your pancakes on the sweeter side.
Can I make this recipe non-vegan?
Absolutely! Make this recipe with whatever milk you have on hand. The egg is still optional in my book.
How many pancakes does this make?
This recipe makes 8 large fluffy pancakes.
But if you make your pancakes smaller (pour less batter) or if you make your batter slightly thinner (add more milk), you can make it go further.
Can I get fancy?
Please do! Add a few blueberry or a small handful of chocolate chips.
I recommend adding your extras after you first pour the batter so you can control the distribution of your fruit or chocolate. Otherwise, blueberries are known to sink to the bottom of the mixing bowl.
If you're feeling EXTRA fancy, scroll to the bottom of this post for more Bisquick pancake recipes.
Can I be less fancy?
I feel like such a yes-man, but yes!
If you want to skip the sugar, baking powder, and vanilla, you absolutely can.
The original, basic pancake recipe on the box doesn't call for them. Just note, the fluffiness will be affected (because of the baking powder), but that's not a game changer for me.
Plus, if you're using vanilla soy milk or vanilla almond milk, you may want to skip the added vanilla and sugar anyway since these vegan milks are sweetened.
What do I do with leftovers?
I can't lie...
I rarely have leftover pancakes when I make this recipe. Even though eight pancakes is more than plenty for two, my husband and I are pancake fiends.
But, if you do have leftovers, I have a plan.
Store your leftover pancakes in a gallon size Ziploc bag, separating each pancake with a small square of parchment paper. This makes them easy to separate.
When you want to pull a leftover frozen pancake down, you can either pop them in the toaster or zap them in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds.
Read more about how to store leftover pancakes.
📖 Recipe
Easy Bisquick Vegan Pancakes
Ingredients
- 2 cups Bisquick
- 2 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1½ cups non-dairy milk I use coconut milk or unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Instructions
- Mix the first four ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
- Add one cup of milk and stir. Slowly add remaining half cup, until the consistency is to your liking. For fluffier pancakes, let the batter sit for a few minutes before cooking.
- Heat pan to medium heat and spray with cooking spray or coat with butter. When hot, pour ¼ cup or less of batter on to the pan, depending on how big you want your pancakes. Cook both sides until golden.

Great recipe!
Kelsey Smith says
Thanks, Kim! I'm very happy to hear it.
Megan says
This recipe is shit. It foams, gets too foamy to cook through without burning the outside out sticking without using a VERY low heat. There are better out there FOR SURE. Don’t waste your time with this one.
Kelsey Smith says
Hi Megan! Is it possible you used baking soda instead of baking powder?
William Ruder says
You are absolutely wrong. You must be making it wrong. I make these every weekend and they are the lightest most perfect pancakes. I've ever had, and I cook them on number 4 on my gas stove.
Kelsey Smith says
William, thanks for defending my honor.
Livin4Jesus says
This was a great recipe. It totally saved the day when we were out of eggs, and I even still used regular 2% milk. The pancakes were amazing ya’ll!
Kelsey Smith says
I really appreciate you stopping back by to comment!

One of the best vegan pancake recipes I found! So easy to make!!
Kathy says
Would it be possible to add protein powder to this recipe? Trying to increase protein for toddler who is allergic to eggs.
Kelsey Smith says
Should work! I haven't tested it, but I found a recipe for protein powder Bisquick pancakes.
Tabby S says
My boyfriend and I were a little disappointed that even after following the recipe exactly, our pancakes were tough to flip and extremely crumbly in texture. They literally fell apart on the way to our mouths 🙁
Kelsey Smith says
Very sorry to hear that Tabby.
Matt and Melissa says
We just learned that Bisquick is vegan. My wife is super allergic to dairy so it has been a lot of trial and error with many different recipes. But this recipe was absolutely amazing! Definitely a keeper as our go-to for pancakes. We used Earth Balance for the butter!
Kelsey Smith says
I like Earth Balance, it has a good saltiness. Glad you liked the recipe, thanks for stopping back by!
CandyGirl says

Kelsey Smith says
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I'm so happy to hear that.
Laurel says
With the price of eggs I'm trying omit them from things they can be substituted for. I only used 1 cup almond milk and I used this for waffles and it was very good. A little crumbling so be careful taking them out.
Miss Emily Hess says
These were AMAZING. So light and fluffy, better than the original recipe. Thank you for making vegan breakfast easy!!!

Hi. How much sodium is in this recipe?

Made these for my boys. I added 1 1/2 tsp as ole cider vinegar to the nut milk. Made them really fluffy. Thanks for the recipe.

These were great!!!
I used cashew milk and they turned out just as good as you said.
Katie says
You know, I usually make pancakes from scratch but was looking for a shortcut. I seriously make the same recipe but use flour for bisquik! Nice to see. I loved this recipe because of all the tips you give. I’m not a great cook and this is written so even I can make them right! Haha. Thank you!
Kelsey Smith says
You're probably a better cook than you give yourself credit for! Thanks for stopping by.
Brie says
Do you think we could use this recipe as a waffle batter ?
Kelsey Smith says
I haven't tried it, but maybe cut back on the milk slightly (try 1-1/3 cup), skip the baking powder, and add 2 tbsp vegetable oil. Waffles usually have higher fat content so they crisp up.
Sarah says
These pancakes are great!
Can I use water instead of a nondairy milk?
Kelsey Smith says
I haven't tried that. I imagine it would turn out differently, but it still has sugar and vanilla in it, so it might be ok!
Teresa says
Wow. These were really great. I’ve tried other vegan Bisquick recipes that require only plant milk and Bisquick; they were so bland. Adding the sugar, vanilla, & baking powder made such a difference. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. Thank you for this. 😀
Kelsey Smith says
Very happy to hear it!
Lizzy says
I've done it and it works well!
Rudy says
Doesn't Bisquick basic mix already have sugar and baking powder in it? I would think you only need to add a milk and egg replacement.
Kelsey Smith says
Go for it! Let me know how it goes.
Karen says
Still no word on gluten free hey? I have two sons with allergies; one with a milk/egg, the other wheat/gluten.
We basically eat the same things on rotation. But this recipe would be great if I knew I could use GF bisquick as a sub! Pancakes are just so fun! Thank you!
Kelsey Smith says
I've never tested it, you'll have to let me know how it goes.
Lizzy says
I've done it and it works just great! They're still fluffy and delish 🙂
Grace says
These pancakes were DELICIOUS!! I left out the sugar and vanilla. My recipe was just the soy milk and bisquick. Totally making these again! Thanks for a great recipe Kelsey! 🙂
Kelsey Smith says
Very happy to hear that! Thanks for trying it out.
Jess says
Do u think i can switch cinnamon in place of vanilla?
Kelsey Smith says
Those two ingredients have very different flavors, but I think you can omit vanilla either way.
Aimee B. says
I've been making vegan pancakes with the Heart Smart Bisquick for years. They are our family's favorite. I use a flax egg and then add in the melt in your mouth ingredients as listed on the package, plus some cinnamon. They're amazing.
Amber Somkuwar says
Hey! Awe man, the texture is just right with these pancakes... i grew up on Bisquick pancakes and it's my fav.... but one major problem girly... these taste like major baking soda! hehe... which the texture was soo soo good I decided to put enough maple syrup on them so I couldn't notice it.. but yeah still... just way too much baking soda... unless you put a cup of maple syrup on these babies they just are not right... 🙁 but thanks for trying <3 <3
Kelsey Smith says
Thanks for the feedback, Amber! You need to use Baking Powder, not soda.
Sharon says
Problem was you used baking soda and not baking powder like called for.
Jennifer M says
I'm going to be honest...I only tried this recipe because I was out of milk and eggs and was looking for a way to still make pancakes with my Bisquik. Well, I had all the ingredients this recipe called for and figured I'd try it. I must say, I'm impressed. These were very delicious! I couldn't even tell a difference. Definitely satisfied my craving for pancakes and my son loved them as well!
Kelsey Smith says
Very glad to hear that! I've been making these for me and my husband for years, and just recently he noticed I didn't add eggs to the batter, and he was shocked. He definitely couldn't tell a difference.
laila rivecca says
i used soy milk and the tasted EXACTLY like real classic delicious pancakes. i loved them!
Kelsey Smith says
I'm so glad you liked them! Also, thanks very much for the info on white sugar. I'm not an expert on veganism, so I really appreciate it.
Jessica Marie Bales says
Hello, Kelsey! I am quite interested in your recipe just a couple questions! Can I use this recipe to make pancake muffins? Almond milk is a-okay, I assume? Also, do I have to use sugar?
Kelsey Smith says
Almond milk, absolutely - any milk is great here. You can skip the sugar, they won't be as sweet, but still very tasty. I've never tried to make muffins with this recipe! But that sounds cool.
Andi Gallagher says
I'd like to add oatmeal to this recipe for my picky eater... can I just throw it in?
Kelsey Smith says
You might compensate by adding less Bisquick or a little more milk to thin it out.
Joy says
What can you use to substitute the sugar and baking powder since those ingredients aren't good for you.
Kelsey Smith says
You can actually skip them entirely! The basic bisquick recipe doesn't call for them at all.
AlesiaB says
Converting to vegetarian/vegan. Tried recipe, yum. Egg does hold pancakes together better, did not add, but did add a little lemon juice to cut down on sweet. Will try again!
Amber says
Thank you for this recipe! I've used it for about a year now. Still our "go-to" pancakes, even after food allergies were ruled-out! Love that I don't have to have eggs in the house and the flavor is awesome! Thought I'd say thanks since they make my kids, and I, so happy! 😁
Kelsey Smith says
Amber, I am so happy the kids love it, too!
Maryann Farrell says
Hi, I'm looking for a vegan Bisquick, but they all have sugar. Do you know if the sugar they use is charred with beef by product? I recently found out white sugar is bleached with beef by product. I wish that it weren't true, because white sugar is everywhere. Makes my life even more difficult. Thanks
laila rivecca says
actually, most white sugar is vegan! but once in a while its not. you either risk it or don;t but if you do take the risk its a 99 % chance its vegan sugar!
Zoe Elizabeth says
I make these all the time and they are INCREDIBLE!! I'm fully vegan and one of my favorite foods before I went vegan was pancakes. So naturally I was always trying different vegan recipies trying to find tge best one and this is definitely it! All my non vegan friends say that they're their favorite pancakes vegan or non vegan. Thank you for this!
Kelsey Smith says
You are very welcome, Zoe. Thank you so much for coming back to leave a comment!
Carol says
Thanks for the recipe! Breakfast was a hit for my new vegan daughter and mom and dad loved them too. He had plan and we threw blueberries in ours, delicious. Can't wait to try the banana and peanut butter syrup.
Devyn says
These were great! I'm got vegan but I had no eggs and no flour, but I had bisquick! The vanilla made them taste super yummy. The ¼ cup was a great measurement for how big they should be and they were very fluffy and tall 🙂
Heidi says
I am prepping and wanted to be able to make pancakes for us. There would be no eggs and only dry milk. After lots of research, I find yours is the very best! Thank you! We even liked it better than other recipes that DO use eggs!
Janet S says
This recipe was a lifesaver to me! I had taken my children berry picking and wanted to make Bisquick pancakes using the fresh blueberries, just like my Grandmother did when she took me berry picking. The problem is, my 10-yr-old son is allergic to both milk and eggs. When we came across your recipe, we tried it and it was AMAZING. We used Silk's Very Vanilla Soymilk as the milk and skipped the vanilla. They turned out FANTASTIC!!! Thank you for helping me to recreate a favorite memory with my children!
Kelsey Reddick says
Thank you for sharing that story! That is so sweet. I'm glad they turned out well, Silk Very Vanilla is delicious, and I know berries would be incredibly in this.
Kim says
These are perfect! Thanks for sharing! These are now my go to vegan pancake recipe!
Kells says
Just whipped these up, I doubled te batch and added choc chips. Delicious and insanely fluffy. Thank you!
